Article Writing question by Sue: Tips for writing a newspaper article?
I’m writing an article for my school newspaper for the first time. This one is pretty nerve-wracking though because I’m doing it on a new club in my school, and I don’t want the club advisers to be disappointed by the way I present them.
Any tips? Writing tips, content, or anything constructive is appreciated!

First tip: don’t bury the lede (lede is an old-fashioned spelling of “lead” and means the main part of the story). In the first paragraph, put they key information in there, and use the rest of the story to give details.
Second tip: avoid big, fancy words. If you have a choice between two words that mean the same thing, and one of them is more common than the other word, that’s the word you want. This is a big, big change from writing for any English class you’ve ever had, where they value you using an expanded vocabulary. The point of a newspaper article is not to show how many words you know, but to be read and understood.
And third, don’t have long paragraphs. Big paragraphs are a disincentive to the reader, and makes them want to read something else.
Beyond that, follow the basics — good grammar, spelling — and you’ll be OK.
Include the 5 W’s – Who, What, When, Where, and Why in your articles. It also helps if you include details as far as how and any relevant background.
Sentences should be clear, concise and worded in a manner that is appropriate for the audience.
Another important concept to keep in mind when writing a news story is the pyramid format, developed in the early years of broadcasting when reception was often inconsistent.
Provide background information on past proceedings and clearly outline the evolution of the story.
The quality of writing is important. Write, revise, revise, and revise. Avoid redundancy. Even if the subject is boring, your article should still be interesting and well-written.Once the author has completed the actual writing process, there are several additional steps that should be taken to ensure that the piece is ready for publication.
